Start with a Trapeze.

You are going to bring the string underneath the yo-yo and then just as the string hits your throwhand finger, let go and this should create a large loop. Using your non-throwhand stick your finger back into the loop. (Sometimes it helps to use a more responsive yo-yo or a less heavy yo-yo in my experience.)
